Two people in Poland were arrested by local authorities for allegedly being involved in espionage. Both of them have been accused of working as spies for the Chinese government. And one of them — a Chinese national- is Chinese tech giant Huawei’s head of sales in Poland, as per the New York Times. This incident was reported by Polish TV channel TVP via BBC.

The other person apprehended by the police is a Polish national who works for telecom company Orange Polska.

Of late, Orange Polska collaborated with Huawei for its next generation 5G network.

Who are the two men?

According to the New York Times, the Huawei employee has been identified as Weijing W. He used to work for the Chinese Consulate in Gdansk, Poland, before joining Huawei in 2011, says Polish TV.

The other person has been identified as Piotr D. who used to work for Poland’s internal security agency, the ABW, before corruption allegations made him leave. According to Maciej Wasik, deputy head of Poland’s special services, Piotr had access to information about Poland’s secure internal communications systems while at the ABW.

If found guilty, both men could be incarcerated for 10 years.

What Huawei and China have said

Huawei, in a statement has said that it “complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where it operates, and we require every employee to abide by the laws and regulations in the countries where they are based.”

The Chinese foreign ministry is “highly concerned” about the arrests.

Huawei has been facing a lot of controversies recently, with rumours of company’s equipment being used by the Government of China for the purpose of espionage doing the rounds. As per the rumours, these equipment, when used for building a country’s infrastructure will be used for spying. The United States has been reportedly mulling over banning Huawei’s equipment from communication networks. The superpower has also urged its allies to do the same.
